The winter prior to that Tevis, high melt-of and late rain had undermined one of the piers. After closing the bridge the entire year, the State of Ca had granted the ride a conditional permit for the day of the ride. There was a seismic device on the bridge with the possibility of the ride having to re-route the trail (to the trail that we had used all year) at any time. A fund had been established to "Save No Hands" which was eventually shored up to standards that allowed it to be reopened the following spring. That is my best recollection of the events, which may be slightly different but you get the idea..I hope.
