Yes, and their BC is not recognized by AERC.? In addition, the 2009
Rules starts with, "The philosophy of the Western States Trail Ride
(“The Tevis Cup”) is to ride in the best tradition of good
sportsmanship..."? There is nothing of good sportsmanship in forbidding
one half the competitors the right to start at the same time as the
other half, whether the privileged group is given a 2 minute head start
or 2 hours, unless the second group is given a compensatory 2 minutes
or 2 hours to round out their total competition time.
There is nothing in the rule book that mandates the "race" be head on
head. Many races are won by minimum time against the clock. For example
all skiing events, Bobsled, Luge, etc. While it is nice to have all
start at the same time and the race progress as one often thinks of as
a race in is not mandatory and in fact would most likely solve the
issues of congestion at the Tevis by spreading the riders out on the
trail mitigation the potential for congestion. Say 50 start every 10 to
15 minutes. A random draw could be used to determine starting time. The
rider gets 24 hours from his starting time and the ride time is used
for placing.
