[RC] Tevis - OT riders - sherman

Title: Message
A riding buddy and I were just discussing that problem today. Maybe someday ride management will invest in microchips used for the day by each entrant (reusable) that gets scanned at the start and finish to allow each rider 24 hours to complete. Isn't that done at some big marathons?

Any way you start Tevis, there is NO WAY everyone can start at the same time as the road is too narrow and by the time the 200th rider gets to the start they will probably be 15 minutes behind the front starters.  And the pens do make for a safer start, keeping the horses going round and round in the pen (good warm-up) and then supposedly a nice brisk walk to the start line while everyone holds their position. Not everyone is honest about this, probably anxious to get across the start line.  Management could  give a 5 or 10 minute allowance at the cut-offs to pen 2 or pen 3 starters to make up for the late start...no expense to do that, but maybe a recordkeeping nightmare.

Are you saying that pen 2 and pen 3 riders are REQUIRED by Tevis management to leave later than pen 1 riders and NOT given a full 24 hours to complete? How is that not a violation of AERC rules 5 and 5.2?
5. The ride must provide a specific amount of time (total competition time) which will include all stops and holds, and within which competitors
must complete the ride to qualify for placing or completion.
5.2 Maximum competition time will be according to the following prescription:
12 hours for 50 miles, 24 hours for 100 miles, and other distances
to be according to the chart in Appendix A.
