True, though with a ride as big as Tevis, that would be a pretty long starting period. At about 170 riders, it would take about 1 hour and 10 minutes for everyone to start. I agree, though, it would have the potential to ease some of the congestion -- especially if the start positions were assigned by management so that the faster horses were in front, rather than allowing the gamesmanship that someone else pointed out, with the faster riders deliberately starting in back.

Another possible way is to start riders one minute apart. When this is done, your start time is the time plus your number in minutes. Many CTR managers have done this for years with no problems with the paper work.
