Instinctive reaction to this message: Wrapping a rope around your forearm sounds like a recipe for disaster. I never wrap a rope around ANY part of my body.

This is the COMPLETE opposite of what I believe in. Every good trainer I've ever learned from has drilled into my head that "it's the release that teaches". You ALWAYS give a release when the horse tries at all (and sometimes that try is as small as the flick of an ear). If you build on those tries, eventually you have a horse that will be willing to try just about anything for you. It may take longer in the beginning, but in the long run you actually get stuff done faster.
