Fw: [RC] competition scratches - Barbara McCraryThat SHOULD have been Desitin, not Desenex. I KNEW I had the wrong word but couldn't think of the right one.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara McCrary" <bigcreekranch@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <rides2far@xxxxxxxx>; <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, October 21, 2008 7:27 AM Subject: Re: [RC] competition scratches We had a couple of cases of contagious scratches, about 30 years ago, apparently brought in from outside by a new horse we bought. But the worst cases of "whatever you call it" was not contagious but environmental. Every year we rode on Death Valley ride (the old route, through Trona) our horses would pick up a nasty condition from the alkali dust (I figured). So I took to clipping the pastern hair in back close to the skin, then slathering that area with Desenex, so the alkali would not get to the skin. It was a yucky mess that had to wiped of each day, then re-applied, but it seemed to protect the skin from the alkali and keep the flexed part of the pastern soft and pliable. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
