[RC] IV Fluids before the ride (was: Malaysia, etc.) - k s swigartKathy Brunjes said: we were given permission to give the horses fluids after hours (barns close at 7pm), so we stayed and ran fluids until 9:00pm - we all were so tired from the exhausting day! we were falling asleep in the stalls holding the IV bags... I must confess, I find this statement disturbing. While I think I can understand the rationale (horse's don't drink enough when stressed during transport and are probably dehydrated and this is a quick and easy way to remedy that), I hate to think that the sport of endurance has come to the point that horses need to be pre-hydrated via IV in order to compete. I wonder if we are going to start seeing this on horses that travel long distances to rides here. There isn't anything in the AERC's rules that prohibits a rider from arriving at base camp, hooking the horse up to an IV, and then vetting the horse in after doing so. At least not in my reading of the rules. Am I the only one who is bothered by this? kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
