Re: [RC] Coggins - Sisu West RanchAfter a rather nasty EIA outbreak in the late '70's (I was there, it happened to my saddle club.), WI with the input of horsemen put in a rather good Coggins policy (there may be many who disagree, but this is my opinion.)If you are the organizer of an "event" (defined in the regs to cover any time two or more horses get together by prearrangement), you must check for negative Coggins and KEEP THE REQUIRED INFORMATION for two years. This produces two benefits for the state vet. First, the state has a way to encourage people to actually do the checking. Second, if a positive horse shows up there is a paper trail to the other horses it has contacted. I know that someone will bring up the usual stuff about how papers can be forged, how wrong papers can be used etc., but this set of regulations does seem to have stopped outbreaks. If anyone has personal knowledge of an outbreak of EIA in WI recently, please post and I will modify my contention. Of course the next thing that is needed to help stop the spread of diseases all around our nation is to actually implement the national animal identification system. I have done my part. My place is registered, and I am on the list to be a demonstration ranch when MT starts actually tagging horses. I know that it is an "invasion of privacy", after all neither the government nor any other person could drive by my pasture on US highway 93 and conclude that I have 7 horses (one chestnut, two bays, and 4 grays, most likely Arabian or part Arabians).
