[RC] Gut Sounds - Alison Farrin

Scott asked a question about how vets decide what score to give gut sounds and
I posted back to him the explanation I had received from one of our ride vets a
few years back. He felt it would be beneficial to post this to the list, as
several people had asked.

She said that one should be able to hear gut sounds in all four quadrants of
the intestinal system. If you watch the vet, they normally listen both high
and low on each flank. A horse with an "A" on gut sounds has audible noise
from all four quadrants. Reduced or absent noise in one more quadrants drops
it to a "B" and a "C" is minimal or no sounds in multiple quadrants.

I'd be interested to hear from some of the Ridecamp vets if they "listen"
differently.

Susan posted a good response awhile back with specific discussion on how work
and adrenalin affect the fluid in the gut and why we look to gut sounds as an
indicator of the horse's well being. Its worth searching the archives if you
are interested in the science behind the sounds
