Re: [RC] splash! (now funny habits) - Mandi

My mare doesn't have any funny drinking habits but while we're on the subject of horses and water....She can't swim to save her life!  I've taken her in areas where the water is just deep enough for her to swim and her whole body will go under water-head and everything.  Then, she just bounds up and then back into the water.  She just doesn't get it!  I've had water up to my waist and her head was beneath the water....I know this is not really safe so now we don't try anymore.  Anybody else have a horse that can't swim?

When riding through Goose Lake, at Sivler Creek, my horse will drink the
entire way walking across. He even manages to drink at a trot when the
waters high. You can let him drink his "fill" at the begining, but he still
starts drinking again when we are going across.

P.S. We no longer go through goose lake, DNR asked us to stop. (But didn't
notify any one else..) Some endangered species I guess.

immerse his face almost up to his eyes to drink sometimes. My horse's goofy
trick is that after drinking, he'll often trot off down the trail with his
tongue sticking out. I would have never realized he was doing it except
that people are always laughing and telling me about it. One of my favorite
ride photos of us has him trotting along with his tongue out, taken shortly
after a water stop.
