RE: [RC] Beet pulp pellets question - Dream WeaverThe amount of molassas that might be in the shredded pulp is still minimal per feeding. It can be. It also might not be. Some no-molasses beet pulp has tested as high as in the mid 20% range for sugar content. Mine usually is around 5%, which is higher than the complete feed I use. I've spoken with the feed dealer nutritionists and they cannot guarantee the content from batch to batch. What you get, is what you get. It can and does vary considerably. I always rinse my beet pulp for that reason. If you are dealing with an insulin resistant horse, one that is "hot" at the start of a ride, or a barefoot horse that is hoof sensitive to sugars then something as simple as rinsing beet pulp (even if it is supposed to be molasses free) can make a big difference. I can store two 50 pound bags of BP pellets in the same space that I can store one bag of shreds. The shreds are usually dirty, musty smelling and contain rodent parts. Here's a blog post showing my trailer organization in the horse part with the feed containers that hold two bags of feed. http://enduranceridestuff.com/blog/2009/07/horse-trailer-organization-tips/ I don't use a lot of BP so it's nice that the pellets keep so well. When traveling it's much easier to put twice as much feed in the same space. It does take longer to soak, but it's not really an inconvenience - when I feed each time I start more soaking. When I first started buying BP pellets they were around $4 something a bag, now it's up to $13 a bag.
