Thanks folks. I hope there is more followup of this in the news, and it becomes clear whether the reporter got it wrong or not. Your takes make a lot of sense, and would certainly be a lot better news than the way it was reported, which made it sound as if this strain could be spread by much more casual contact. I took the "like the flu" part right out of the article.
Along the same lines is this thought: Skunks and raccoons may be able to spread within family groups because they groom each other, at least when the babies are young. If the saliva has a high virus load, it's not impossible that there may be microscopic breaks in the skin, rather than some other type of contact like airborn or fecal/oral spread.

Information I have always beleived in the past is that there is very high numbers of the virus in the siliva of infected animals, as a result there does not need a visible scratch.
