Is there any chance that rides will allow
generators to be run after "bedtime" in the future, given the obvious risk of
using propane heaters? No, not everyone can afford $45,000 or more for a
nice LQ trailer with safe heat. Yes, those of us who truly love the sport
will "rough it" when we have to. But at the same time, most of today's
electric generators are very quiet and a small space heater would obviate the
need to carry propane and have an open flame within an enclosed
trailer.
when my RV went up in flames... there were lots of mini
explosions... the batteries, propane tank, gas tank, even the tires blew
up! all we had left was a little bit of the frame all twisted and a
melted engine block.

I'm guessing large quantities of propane in storage may have been a large
part of the problem. I tend to have lots of those little canisters stored
in the living area. The photos on my page are from different angles than
Teddy's. You get a good view of the tanks, etc. Can anybody out there
explain to me the safety features on those things and what it takes for
them to blow etc?

One thing I forgot to mention is that there was apparently no smoke
alarm. I have a combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarm and it is pretty
sensitive. The lantern & hotplate have set it off before. A smoke alarm
might have summoned the person in the next trailer sooner. $25 or
whatever that thing costs is a price anyone who sleeps in a trailer
should be happy to fork over.
Any time something happens at a ride it gives you one more thing to think
about. If you break a stirrup now you have to bring spares. Break a
stirrup leather on a western type and now you have to bring spare
*saddles*, etc.
This incident made me very aware of escape possibilities for *my* rig. We
were in fenced lots, which normally is very nice because if one group of
horses escapes it keeps it from spreading camp wide. However, there was
only one gate out of the field. It had rained a tremendous amount Friday
and the gate area was 4x4 only and very churned up so I could imagine a
rig evacuating getting stuck (turned out it had dried nicely). There was
a strong steady wind blowing from the fire towards our end of the field.
If this had been during the drought there could have been a very fast
moving grass fire coming our way. That idea had me eyeing the posts on
that fence wondering how fast you'd have to hit them to keep going! :-P
Next thing somebody said, "What if that had been at Million Pines!"
EEEK!
The flames were going so high out the top of that trailer you could
imagine it igniting trees easy. If you see somebody digging a fire break
around their rig at the next dry ride that'll probably be me
