RE: [RC] Safest at the Trot??? - Smith, Dave

I fit Kat's description quite well. When I was taking my first riding
lessons, I loved the canter, was fine with the walk but HATED the trot.
I just couldn't seem to get it. It turned out that the school horse I
was riding has a terrible, giggly trot and even my instructor didn't
really like riding it. Once I began riding my mustang I avoided the
trot until I watched Linda Parelli demonstrate her "fluidity" approach.
I tried it and it all fell in place. Now I love the trot and so does
Hermano, my mustang. He likes to get out in front with ears up and just
trot and trot. Interestingly, my riding partners don't like to follow
him at the trot. Apparently at his preferred trot speed, their horses
begin to have a choppy trot. They want us to either canter or let their
horses lead in the trot.

Agree!! I *hate* the walk--it picks at my impatient nature.

I love the trot and feel most secure there. Canter isn't too bad,
either.
One of the two times in my life I've fallen off a horse was at the trot.

The timing was most helpful in assisting me figure out how to come off
and
stay out of the horse's way. :-)

I agree--I tend to feel quite secure when the horse spooks at the
trot...
maybe it is just a synch thing...

*raises her hand* ME ME ME! To this day I feel much more secure at a
trot
than a canter. Its much easier for me to pick up the rhythm and keep a

secure seat. It used to puzzle people that I would fall off at a
canter
and never get off balance when my horse would dodge sideways at a
trot.
But then I've always been an odd person.

Is there ANYBODY out there who, when learning to ride, thought "yep,
the
trot is the easiest for me to get in rhythm with?" I have taught a
lot
of people to ride, and not a one of them has ever said that.
