Re: [RC] [RC] Flaxen, Sabino gene - Zephyr Arabians--- Kris <aggiekris@xxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: The difference is caused by some sort of modifier (one of these days when i get funding, i plan on doing a project with sabino), similar to the leopard complex in Appaloosas. One gene is responsible for all 6 patterns, but as yet, no one really knows the inheritance of one pattern versus another. The sabino (or leopard) gene is resposible for opening a gate which allows whatever variant of color for which modifiers are present. I've been sitting out this discussion, but wanted to jump in and say that Kris is making a good point here. Sabino does not breed like a single-gene trait. It *may* be an "on/off" switch (like the Lp gene in appaloosas) with additional modifiers controlling the degree and type of expression, or it *may* be a polygenic trait with no main "on/off" gene. In other words, because of the way sabino breeds and the wild variance in expression, it's probably incorrect to talk about a "sabino gene." It's a pattern that is likely controlled by multiple genes. Horses that are "regularly marked" (as little as a blaze and some socks) can and do produce sabinos with enough white to qualify for pinto registration. As humans we want to make rules about how much white & where to be labeled sabino, but it's quite possible that the genetics don't play by those rules. This is consistant with a polygenic trait. ~Nicole Zephyr Arabians http://www.zephyrarabians.com KattWmn Web Design http://www.kattwmn.com __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL ?
