Re: [RC] [RC] pics of my favorite training hill - Barbara McCrary
We do have some considerable stands of
native grasses, primarily Purple Needlegrass (bunchgrass) that stays slightly
green at the crown. Grazing seems to enhance its vitality, we've
noticed.
...it doesn't
keep the grass green. For some reason, our seasons indicate the grass
shall turn brown by mid-June, and there is little to change that, even a wet
winter. I think in 1997-98, when we had so much rain (much more than
this year), the grass showed a tiny bit of green at about July
1st, but then did its summer thing. Grass heads out and is destined to
be dry by mid-June...it's programmed that way.

*Just a side note; most of Calif. native
grasslands (perennial bunch grasses) is gone, replaced by European
annuals...the native grasses have been mostly out-competed with the
non-native species...has caused some interesting soils and ecological
changes. Annuals are programmed to grow fast, produce seed and die
(turn brown)...
