Re: [RC] [RC] broken bone screws & returning to riding - Dyane Smith

As someone who is not, I think the operative phrase here might be "too young
for a hip replacement". Some of us are; lots of us aren't. Customize your
post-trauma regimen.

Well, I broke my hip being thrown from a horse in 1997, and the ER Dr.
happened to be an orthopedic surgeon who decided I was too young for a hip
replacement (broke the ball right off the top of the bone), so he put it
back together with three long screws and gave me a 25% chance of it
working.
I was back in the saddle in about three months, and a year later, had the
screws removed. Just need a saddle with a narrow twist, and I have mostly
forgotten it ever happened.

Six weeks is the normal time for bone healing, then you may require some
PT,
but in the meantime, if it feels OK and if you have a good crew and a good
horse, I know you are good enough to ride with one hand. . . Maybe they
could put on a temporary cast to prevent you from being tempted to use it
too much.
Good luck!

there was some discussion recently about not returning to riding too soon
after a bone break.

anyone have experience to share about whether/how this applies to having
the bone screwed together after a break? (as in, theoretically, the
screwing should alleviate any potential harm from starting back too soon,
yes?)

thanks,
dabney
(yup, you guessed it: I do have a bone [wrist] about to be screwed...and
cuyama's coming up....)
