Re: [RC] Duty to Maintain Trails - Barbara McCrary

What a hash I made of this message. It should read: I asked a ranger several years ago why they rebuilt a section
of trail to about 6 feet wide at the base of the mountain, and he answered, "Barbara, you need to realize that not everyone is a good rider and not everyone has a good trail horse." (The trail would have been safe if it had been only 2 feet wide at that particular site.) When
I mentioned a hazardous area that might stand some upgrading, he answered, "I've been riding that spot for 20 years and never had a problem with it." Yet some very experienced endurance riders have had problems at that spot. Go figure, as they say. Not griping, just commenting. We personally haven't had problems with that spot. And I agree that it wouldn't take much pressure from the public regarding liability to have the state shut down parks all together. (" We don't have the money.") There are some folks out there in the world who believe that people shouldn't be a part of the whole equation and that animals and trees are far more important. But then......I'm straying from the subject, aren't I. No more to be said.

It wouldn't do much good to complain anyway, as the common answer is "We don't have the money to ......(fill in your preferred issue: rangers, maintenance, whatever)." We DON'T complain, I was just stating a fact about a couple of places that I feel are unsafe. We don't have a problem with them, but some less experienced horses could. As an example of inconsistency, I asked a ranger several years ago why they rebuilt a section of trail to about 6 feet wide at the base of the mountain, and he answered that "Barbara, you need to only 2 feet wide at that particular site.) When I mentioned a hazardous area that might stand some upgrading, he answered, "I've been riding that spot for 20 years and never had a problem with it."
