You do have to inspect them periodically. PVC
girths contain plasticizers. These substances change PVC which is hard,
like the PVC waste water pipes in houses, into a soft flexable
material. Eventually, time, movement, sweat etc. extracts the plasticizer
from the PVC girth. In my case after 5 years or so this reached the
critical point 22 miles into a ride and produced a girth sore from the stiff
cracked PVC.
