[RC] newbie- girth question - rides2far

What are the pro's/con's of the many materials girths are offered in.

My experience:

Neoprene: Pros: Easy to clean at each vet check, just rinse off mud &
sand. Cons: Some heat build up and irritates some horses. Doesn't lie as
flat as mohair but flatter than sheepskin.

Sheepskin: Pros: Natural, breathable, less skin irritation when clean.
Cons: Cannot get Desitin off of it (we've ruined an $80 girth) Gets
really dirty, can't clean well at check, it's thick, more likely to
irritate elbows.

Mohair: My favorite. Doesn't irritate skin, lies flat so elbows can
clear if it gets forward.
Cons: difficult to clean at checks.

My saddle has English dressage type billets so a person with center fire
rigging may have different priorities. I like the looks of the quick
cinch. I prefer that the buckle to the girth not be between my leg and
the horse so like a low girthing setup.

Make sure you get stainless steel buckles on whatever. I much prefer
roller buckles...enough to say definately get them on an english girth.
