Re: [RC] to Jonni -re archives and barefoot - Karen Sullivan

Well.....I for one am sure not understaniding your analogy.
A shoe is nailed through the hoof wall and my horses sure don't object to
that. They generally
are nailed the first three holes each side of the toe. There is quite a bit
of shoe to the sides of the
heel, and the shine marks at the back of the shoe (when removed) indicate
the expansion and
movement of the heel during travel. I am not defending steel shoes over
other alternatives, but
I see no proof that they restrict hoof expansion. I am not pleased with the
lack of shock-absorbtion,
and hope Boa boots might be an alternative on at least on of our horses, and
will look at them
at the convention.

At this time, I have yet to see a horse that can even pleasure ride barefoot
on our local trails year round
in Lake County.

If you sit on your foot for too long and it becomes numb (falls asleep) or
if you put a tourniquet on your ankle and your foot becomes numb, will it
still bleed if you cut it? Does it not become cold? Why would a horse be
any different than a human?

The note beside the image says "Note the shod foot has virtually no blood
circulation. This is consistant with horses with shoes on."

My horse is shod; if he nicks himself he bleeds, his feet still grow, so
there must be enough blood flow for that. Maybe the other 3 legs are just
*hot*??

Excuse me, but have you ever seen a thermograph of a shod foot and leg as
compared to one without a shoe? Do check it out!

I DO get damm sickNtired of the folks that say that all shod horses are
being crippled and 'cant feel their feet'.... Of course you, I, and
most experienced riders know thats a pile of BS but what about the new
to horses folks that read this drivel?

Thank you, Teresa. I've been trying to figure out a way to put that
diplomatically, but I think you said it best by just flat out saying it.
