RE: [RC] to Jonni -re archives and barefoot - heidiIf you sit on your foot for too long and it becomes numb (falls asleep) or if you put a tourniquet on your ankle and your foot becomes numb, will it still bleed if you cut it? Does it not become cold? Why would a horse be any different than a human? Brenda, you miss the point. The horse is NOT different from the human. The shod hoof is NOT numb, it does NOT have its circulation cut off, and whether it is warm or cold has little to do with whether it is shod or not, and a lot to do with whether the horse is standing in the snow or has just galloped down the pavement on a hot day. Horses with numb feet are stumbly, they don't respond to pathology such as abcesses and puntures, etc. Shod horses DO show perfectly normal pain responses in their feet when there is a painful lesion there. (Just try quicking one!) BUT--shod horses tend to have far fewer painful lesions in their feet when ridden in difficult footing, because the shoe protects the foot. That, ma'am, is why horses are shod in the first place. Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
