Re: [RC] corn oil for gastric ulcer prevention? - heidiThe article says the studies done on humans had shown that a major component in corn oil helped protect gastric mucosal lining. Jana Cargile, DVM, PhD decided to explore whether that would hold true for horses. Results showed that with corn oil fed daily, acid output dropped while prostaglandin E2 levels rose, so that "there was a decrease in one thing that causes gastric ulcers, combined with an increase of something that prevents them". OK, glad to know that. It is dicey extrapolating from human research and making assumptions that it will be the same in horses--but good to hear someone took a look. Would this [slowing of gastric emptying] be an issue with even 3/4c a day? competitions are one of the few times I worry about my horse not eating enough (often enough) so that gastric acid is an issue. Yes, it would. And since the hindgut is stimulated by what is called the gastrocolic reflex (ie increased stomach activity reflexly causes gut sounds in the hindgut), and since fat slows stomach motility, it ISN'T something you want in there on ride day! If your horse is having issues about eating well at rides, he may need to go on more long campouts, etc., to relax about eating in an away-from-home riding setting.
