Re: [RC] corn oil for gastric ulcer prevention? - heidiI just read in the Nov issue of Equus (p 15) that a study showed that adding corn oil to a horses daily rations may help to prevent gastric ulcers. They recommend feeding 3/4 cup daily. I am planning to try this with Gabriel (my endurance horse), I don't have any reason to think he has ulcers, and I'd sure like to keep it that way! Any comments from vets on this? Is there anything I need to know about feeding corn oil? I'm assuming that keeping it refrigerated is all I need to do......and that I can mix it in with beet pulp and daily supplements. Do check out Susan Garlinghouse's information about feeding fats/oils. She is one of the experts in the field. As for fats decreasing the incidence of ulcers--I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that the reason is that folks have taken an amount of grain OUT of the diet and replaced it with fat. High carbs ARE implicated as a risk factor for ulcers, and getting the calories via fat and forage eliminates this risk. There may be more to it than that, but at least that is a big one. Don't forget that fat also slows gastric emptying--not an issue in daily life, but not something you want to have on ride day. So back off of oils 2-3 days prior to competitions.
