Re: [RC] corn oil for gastric ulcer prevention? - Mike & Kathy KellyHeidi wrote As for fats decreasing the incidence of ulcers--I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that the reason is that folks have taken an amount of grain OUT of the diet and replaced it with fat. High carbs ARE implicated as a risk factor for ulcers, and getting the calories via fat and forage eliminates this risk. There may be more to it than that, but at least that is a big one. The article says the studies done on humans had shown that a major component in corn oil helped protect gastric mucosal lining. Jana Cargile, DVM, PhD decided to explore whether that would hold true for horses. Results showed that with corn oil fed daily, acid output dropped while prostaglandin E2 levels rose, so that "there was a decrease in one thing that causes gastric ulcers, combined with an increase of something that prevents them". Don't forget that fat also slows gastric emptying--not an issue in daily life, but not something you want to have on ride day. So back off of oils 2-3 days prior to competitions. Would this be an issue with even 3/4c a day? competitions are one of the few times I worry about my horse not eating enough (often enough) so that gastric acid is an issue. Thanks Heidi!
