I'll go out and look closer, but if there is a difference, as you say, it's subtle enough as to be not significant. But what about skin? Is unpigmented skin on a horse *really* less resistant to injury and disease? Or do we just see injury and disease there because the skin is white/pink and thus it's more easy to see?
