Re: [RC] [RC] white legs - Ed & Wendy Hauser"...pigment has some properties that convey toughness and hardness to tissues ..." The only scientific study I know of was the US Army's experience in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. The darker skin a soldier had, the less likely he/she was to get "Jungle Rot", which is much like scratches in horses. Apparently, the melanin protects from fungus. As far as the horn on white feet being less good, I have had some barefoot horses with one white foot. Presumably, the only difference between the white foot and the other three was the pigment. The white foot was definitely more likely to get brittle and chip in August. The differences in foot quality between horses are even greater than that. What I mean is there are lots of white footed horses that have better feet than some black footed horses, but if everything is the same (that is on the same horse) black feet are better than white.
