I'm interested in the science of that particular aspect - if such science exists. The science of pigmented skin being tougher is far more straightforward than that of the hooves. With skin, the pigment is protective against UV rays, and the damage of UV rays can set the skin up for pretty much anything else that happens by, whether it be fungal, or bacterial, or whatever. With hooves, I suspect it has to do with just another set of molecules in there providing a bit more density, but that's just my own hypothesis. Can't say I've ever seen any proof of it, other than having dealt with hundreds of horses over the years who had some light feet and some dark feet, and being able to tell the difference, either in trimming them, or in looking at how the feet chip or crack or wear, under certain circumstances.
