Re: [RC] [RC] white legs - heidiI don't get that white feet are weaker theory. My shoer said there is no difference in white and black feet as far as strength. I have a horse for sale on endurance.net that has 4 white feet and he could easily be a barefoot competing horse. I have never seen a difference in white feet. The point that is too often overlooked here is that pigment is only one aspect of what makes feet tough. A white-footed horse with all other traits that make for tough feet will have better feet than a dark-footed horse without the other necessary qualities. Unlike Lif, I have yet to see a horse with some light and some dark feet that I cannot detect a difference between the pigmented and the non-pigmented feet. The difference is often subtle--but it is there. That said, the difference is often sufficiently subtle to underscore the fact that it isn't worth making it a selection factor. There are too many other qualities that determine hoof health. I'm currently riding a chestnut with four white feet who has absolutely outstanding feet. There is still no question in my mind that they would be just a tad tougher if they were dark. But given the quality that they have, and the quality of the rest of the horse, one would be a fool to throw the baby out with the bath water...
