Re: [RC] WNV? to Susan from a Vet - heidiIt can be, but what seems to be the most devastating is people feeling that they are fully protected from WN just because they vaccinated. That could be further from the turth. I've got two healthy, happy out in the field doing endurance rides that had clinical cases of WN. I've also got a few others that I suspect had subclinical cases - they were a little "fluish" for a day or so and we watched them closely for any signs of neurological issues. On the other hand if you know your horses and are informed about the symptoms and call your vet at the first sign the horseswill probably be find. If you ignore the symptoms even for a short time, vaccinated or not your horse could die. So the key with WN, vaccinated or not watch your horse, know your horse and if something is not right call your vet. Which brings up another point. Karen quoted an efficacy for the Fort Dodge vaccine of 95%, but the numbers I've seen from various sources is more in the range of 75-80%. I also sure know a lot of folks who have had clinical cases in vaccinated horses--including Truman! So while it is a good idea to vaccinate if you are in an area where WNV is endemic, Truman is absolutely right about still keeping WNV in mind as a possibility if one's horse just "isn't right"--seek veterinary help anyway!
