Indeed, many exposed horses carry a titer to it, but not all that many
actually do get sick. Granted, it is devastating for those that do.
It can be, but what seems to be the most devastating is people feeling
that they are fully protected from WN just because they vaccinated.
That could be further from the turth. I've got two healthy, happy out
in the field doing endurance rides that had clinical cases of WN. I've
also got a few others that I suspect had subclinical cases - they were
a little "fluish" for a day or so and we watched them closely for any
signs of neurological issues. On the other hand if you know your
horses and are informed about the symptoms and call your vet at the
first sign the horseswill probably be find. If you ignore the symptoms
even for a short time, vaccinated or not your horse could die.
So the key with WN, vaccinated or not watch your horse, know your horse
and if something is not right call your vet.
