Re: [RC] WNV? to Susan from a Vet - heidiOf course each of us must make up our OWN minds as to when and if to vaccinate for anything, but it seems from all the reports that I hear, those who wait until WNV gets TO them to vaccinate, it is too late, and it seems many horses get it. I believe areas of Nevada an California are experiencing that right now. If you hear of a case in your county, you might not be able to get your horse protected soon enough. When I heard it got to Southern parts of Texas a year (or two??) ago, I vaccinated. That was about 300 miles away, and plenty close to make me uneasy..... Yep. We're not even close to cases in our county--just one so far, last year, in our entire state, and that was a horse that likely contracted it elsewhere. My deciding factor is that we are high and dry, and don't tend to have the mosquito vectors. Indeed, many exposed horses carry a titer to it, but not all that many actually do get sick. Granted, it is devastating for those that do. But again, it is our lack of vectors that convinces me that the risk/benefit ratio doesn't merit the vaccination at this time, for my particular herd. That doesn't mean I wouldn't highly recommend it to folks in other areas!
