Heck, they're co-existing right now!  And you've got the right idea,
Barbara.  They can co-exist just as surely as riders striving for placing
and riders striving to complete mileage can co-exist--the latter two every
weekend at virtually every AERC event.  We need not all think alike nor have
the same goals to get along and enjoy the sport.
