I'll fight that. I TOTALLY disagree that a horse that requires 40 or 50 minutes to reach pulse criteria *after the finish* was ridden "too close to the edge." I think most ride vets would disagree with you. Most horses are in trouble if they take that long. A horse that takes over 30 minutes at a vet check has been stressed enough and should not go on, with that I agree. At the finish line it is a whole different situation. First, the horse is not going to be stressed any further. Second, that last leg is the point where contenders racing have their last chance to "go for it," where sprinting occurs. That can easily produce a pulse rate and oxygen deficit that takes longer than 30 minutes to make up, with *no physiological harm or danger whatsoever* -- and I think our 30+ years experience shows that. As for ride vets agreeing or disagreeing, on this question I'd be interested to know what those ride vets who have raced for an endurance finish line themselves think about it (yes, I know you fall into that category). -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
