[RC] pawing at the water trough - Darolyn Butler-DialOk... don't want to stir up flames on "Barefooting" etc.... but one of the things we learn in our "barefoot" regimen is that the horse needs to have his feet (past the coronary band) in water on a regular basis. This is how the foot stays hydrated and supple to have the hoof mechanisms that is necessary for a healthy foot. Does it appear that your horses might be trying to tell you something if they keep insisting on climbing in water tanks and pawing in such. This summer we have dug what some might call a shallow pond around our water tank. You wouldn't believe how our horses love to come up in it stand, and splash and roll in it. & we're in a wet climate! During the horses evolution he was in & out of water several times a day I.e. streams, ponds, etc. for drinking. How can we think that having him on continually dry living arrangements could be conducive to his physiological make up... No way... they need serious moisture on their feet for good foot health. We have 50 horses on our place... all barefoot, unless they are going to a baaaad rocky ride, and then shoes are only on for a few days.... mostly they race & live barefooted. Out of 30 competition horses we probably do somewhere in the range of 5000 plus miles a year. You wouldn't believe how healthy & strong their feet are. So riders.... in the hot & dry times.... please provide a place for your horse to get in the water & stand. They really do love it. dare AERC #25 23,000 miles & ridin' barefoot Darolyn Butler-Dial & Mark Dial CYPRESS TRAILS EQUESTRIAN CENTER & HORSEMAN VIDEO SHOWCASE Proven Endurance Horses for Sale or Lease.
