Re: [RC] Bute 4 days before racing - Heidi SmithThere are shorter acting anti-inflamatory drugs available from vets. The problem (and the good part) of bute is it hangs around for a long time and requires fewer doses. Uhh, bute IS one of the shorter-acting ones. To keep therapeutic levels up, it requires dosing every 12 hours. There may be other shorter-acting ones around, but the only one I can think of off the top of my head is aspirin--which needs to be redosed in the horse every 3-6 hours (one reason why it isn't commonly used), and is even "better" than bute at causing ulcers in the horse (another reason why it isn't commonly used).
