RE: [RC] "German" or standing martingales - Cindy CollinsI missed the beginning of this thread, but the topic was on my mind due to an article in a recent Trail Blazer magazine promoting the use of one in an article on head set. I agree that no competent dressage instructor would use one, but I know these things can be argued forever....so, I will only share that I have seen two different horses with standing martingales trip on rides and then flip over, seriously injuring their riders when they couldn't properly use their heads and necks. I would never, ever use one. I have occasionally used a "running" martingale for the first ten miles of a ride, but even that can be dangerous in a trail situation. Whenever possible, there is no substitute for real dressage training. I listened to people like Becky and Valarie say this for years and finally took their advice and am now a true believer in the benefits for an endurance horse.
