Third, under what AERC Rule did the Ride Manager penalize the riders (giving
completion only). As a member of the Rules Committee and with more than a
decade of experience with our rules I find no precedent for this.

The riders voluntarily gave up their placements in a meeting with the ride
management. And yes, the finish line was perpendicular to the designated
ride course. The Posse keep a close eye on what is going on at these rides.
The announcement did come across the PA system that we had riders coming in,
which in most cases, would have given ample time to clear the roadway, except
Jim wasn't on the roadway. Under general conditions he would have been
perfectly safe right where he was. Management HAD taken reasonable measures
to insure safety, but they can't be expected to make the ride site like a
padded cell either. This ride is one of the best thought out rides I have
ever attended, with lots of detail and thought put into rider and spectator
safety. It was a terrible accident for everyone at the ride and it is
unfortunate to have blame bantered back and forth. Lets put a bit more
energy into helpful suggestions and into concern for the healing of all
involved.
