Heidi, you have this down to a science. It's beyond my understanding. I don't even understand the terminology....heterozygous and homozygous. I'll just take your word for it! Or perhaps you can reduce this to a layman's terms so I CAN understand it?

I have a chestnut gelding who is from a black mare and a bay stallion.

Actually, pretty common. Lack of black pigment (ie red or chestnut) is recessive, so it can "hide" under purtnear anything. The difference between black and bay is controlled by another gene--so both of the above parents were simply heterozygous for black pigment. If you mated such horses repeatedly, odds are that 1/4 of the offspring would be chestnut.
