Actually, pretty common.  Lack of black pigment (ie red or chestnut) is
recessive, so it can "hide" under purtnear anything.  The difference
between black and bay is controlled by another gene--so both of the above
parents were simply heterozygous for black pigment.  If you mated such
horses repeatedly, odds are that 1/4 of the offspring would be chestnut.
