Bowed Tendon
I need some advice on working with a bowed tendon on one of my horses.
We found the bow about 4 weeks ago, initial therapy was cold hosing, light
massage, wrapping but I still turned the horse out on five acres. After ten
days had Nancy Loving ultrasound it, as it looked very good. She suggested a
gel cast for 10 days, then support wraps for another week then light riding
at a walk. I still turned the horse out 4 hours or so a day. I cut the gel
cast off after ten days and saw no improvement only that it rubbed, after a
week of wrapping and turnout the leg felt very tight.
I had another DVM out on Monday, about 4 weeks into this injury, for another
Ultrasound. He rated it a grade one bow, suggested 3 months of no work,
turnout is ok, the a return to light work for another three months.
Nancy's ultrasound was non-specific just showed some loss of echo diagnosed
as edema. The second one was very specific with the superficial flexor tendon
wrapping around the deep. The actual palpable edema is minimal now.
The horse was very sore to palpation on Monday, I haven't put him through
more palpation since then.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
