I'm sure there are times when "circumstances" prevail. Perhaps someone would
like to analyze why we had only 5 riders on our multi-day ride in 1997 (and I
was one of them). It isn't always the weather, or any specific reason, it
just happens sometimes. Sort of the luck of the draw. The way we coped with
that disappointing situation was to state that any less than 10 riders would
cancel the ride. It's not the end of the world. If at least 10 riders cannot
make it, we just have to cancel it and wait for the next year. Perhaps this
is a solution for ride managers ... but it would require advance entry, and I
know many ride managers don't do this, or want it. Each ride manager has to
figure out what will work for him or her.
