[RC] Lucerne and Chaffhaye--different? - Mary KraussChaffhaye is available all over the west from what I can tell. There are dealers in Utah, Oregon, and Washington for certain. Don't know about Idaho. A dealer at the convention says he delivers all the way up to Arlington, WA (from Texas!). The price drops as the quantity rises, so arranging to share a truckload makes sense. He says he'll be selling through each town's co-ops as well (don't know if this is hopeful thinking on the rep's part).Am I correct that Chaffhaye and Lucerne products are different? The first is bagged wet, is allowed to ferment out all the oxygen so as to prevent mold and botulism, with the side benefit of creating a positive pro-biotic environment. It comes out of the bag moist. It looked as though Lucerne hays are more purely hay-in-a-bag: that is, the grass or alfalfa or oat is cut, chopped up, then dried, then packed. Their approach to avoiding mold is to avoid bagging moisture. What comes out of the bag is chopped up hay. On the other hand, the Lucerne commercial mentions something about misting with soybean oil or low-sugar molasses, so maybe they wind up with a fermented product as well. Anyone know??
