Re: [RC] Beet pulp shortage - Dot WigginsI'm pretty sure "cane sugar" and "beet sugar" are the same chemically once processed.Sugar beets are grown for sugar. In more north regions they aren't harvested till after the early frost, makes higher sugar content. Unless added back, beet pulp has next to no sugar/molasses, the whole point is to remove all the sugar possible from the beet. That's where the money is. Beet pulp is just the leftovers. If there is a short crop the processing season may end by Feb. By summer they may be out at the plant. When we were using more we bought it by the ton, usually around 700/900 lbs at a time in the back of a pickup, and stored in tight garbage cans. Several years ago it was $90. a ton. $8.00 for 50# bag?? No idea now, have a some on hand. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara McCrary" Subject: Re: [RC] Beet pulp shortage If the sugar cane industry successfully convinces people that cane sugar is superior to beet sugar, as they are trying to do, then there may be more shortages of beet pulp. Is there any reason sugar beets are grown other than for sugar? Or are they grown just for beet pulp? I truly don't know. I always thought sugar was sugar, whether it was cane or beet. But advertising campaigns can do a lot of influencing. A thought to ponder, and if anyone knows the answer, I'm prepared to be educated. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
