RE: [RC] Another question on canter leads - Jody Rogers-Buttram
I use to change leads for my horse...years ago. I was told by a lady that had well over 5000 miles on one of her horses, that the horse will change when he needs to. So, I started doing that, and guess what...they will change. This same woman told me that a horse knows which gait is best for him. Instead of forcing him into a long trot, if the canter was his choice, I let him. Again, she was right. The horse did great, and swapped up when needed.

Well, then, how often DO you want to change? There's got to be a happy medium somewhere, and sounds like there are problems with changing too much OR changing too little. Is there any kind of "rule of thumb" out there?

Can't tell you on canter, but on the diagonal changes, Josie had taken up the habit of changing every six beats after a prominent rider told her she did. When she rode Valarie's horse in competition she asked if that was OK and Val said, "You don't want to change that often because changing diagonals affects the horse's breathing rhythm and it has to readjust too often".
