[RC] HRMs and mohair girths - k s swigart

Kathy Sherman said:

One of my riding buddies is having trouble with his HRM.
?It seems the mohair girths are constantly stretching on a
?ride and the HRM sensor won't maintain contact with the
?horse. How do you remedy this if the rider doesn't want to
?keep tightening the girth? The saddle seems pretty stable
?even with the loose girth, just no HRM reading.
?
If you don't want to tighten the girth so that it is holding the sensor against
the horse's skin (which I often don't), then you just accept that sometimes the
HRM just doesn't work.? If I am really concerned about wanting to know what the
HRM says, I just stick my hand under the girth on the opposite side fromthe HRM
sensor and hand apply some tension until the HRM starts working again, and then
let go after I have seen what it has to say (this is usually at a vet check
that I care enough about HR to even do this).
?
However, I suspect that it would be possible to just put the sensor under the
saddle pad on the offside (like it is on the near side), in which case the
tightness of the girth stops mattering.? I will have to give it a try and see.
