Wrt hills, if you're traversing a hillside, it is more balanced for the horse to have us rise on the shoulder that's on the uphill side. Also, I have stopped jigging in more than one horse by posting the jig on the diagonal that they hate. We make the devil's bargain of them settling into a walk or working trot in exchange for my staying off their awkward side (or maybe it's -my- awkward side) for a while.
