When Leroy Coggins test for EIA first became available, in the 70's there were places in Florida where 40% were positive, now even in Florida a positive is rare. Well, you're right - but it isn't the test that controls the disease, it's offing the horses that test positive that takes care of it! Seriously, I don't doubt that the use of Coggins testing has helped control EIA, but I do doubt that negative Coggins results are a guarantee of an EIA-free horse, particularly when the test was done a year before. EIA is a dangerous disease, with a long incubation period. It is at least as sneaky as human HIV (same family of viruses). Right. And really, although I don't advocate lots of testing, 12 months before needing another Coggins is rather risky for such a disease. _____________________________________ Lif C.
