Re: [RC] Desperate Times for Horse Owners and for Horses - Karen Everhart
My suggestions remain the same:
1- If one has exhausted all options to continue the life
of an unwanted animal of any kind, then have it put down. The average cost
for euthanasia and disposal, across America, is less than it costs to feed and
provide care for a horse for a month- approximately $200 - 250. This
solution is not rocket science.
I don't know why you continue to refer to the wild horses, which have been
protected for thirty years by federal law, which, as I have said before, have
dwindled in numbers exponentially while the domestic horse numbers have grown
continuously. The issue of slaughter has very, very little to do with the
wild horse and a lot to do with the domestic horse.
The quarter-type horse is the most desirable meat animal. The AQHA
celebrated its 5 millionth registration last year.
The Thoroughbred and Standardbred contribute in a large part to the
numbers. Some say that over 50% of all Thoroughbreds born in 2005 will be
dead due to racing injuries or sent to slaughter before their 4th birthday in
2009.
All other breeds of domestic horses are a part of the formula.
We horse people have lots to be proud of don't we?
Our economy has been in trouble many times in the past, and it will be
again, in the future. That alone does not justify slaughter as it exists
today.
The people who will not humanely euthanize their unwanted horse in today's
economy, are the same ones who would not do it when the economy was in a better
place.

Our economy is in
serious trouble and what would you suggest we, collectively, do about the
massive cost of taking care of unneeded horses - our own, or the excess BLM
horses?
