RE: [RC] sad times posted from another board. - Pickering.Dovie - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

I totally understand that end of it. Sick or painful horses SHOULD be
taken care of in the most humane way possible but, I was referring to
those animals that are perfectly healthy, young and still have a full
life ahead of them, and because people can't "afford" them anymore, they
may just opt to put them down rather than explore EVERY option at
preserving their life (there ARE those out there). Seems senseless to
me. Not senseless in every situation though, I realize.
I doubt there are very many people here on RC or anywhere, for that
matter, that would do this unless it was absolutely the LAST resort and
I'm so sorry if anyone felt judged by my comments, I certainly didn't
mean to add insult to injury.
I sincerely applaud NorCal for their generous and humane offer to do
this for so many that have found themselves faced with this difficult
decision.
It's just plain sad that the state of our economy is forcing the issue
and it breaks my heart. :(

The other thing about this program is if they have a sick horse or one
in
pain or just really aged the euthanaisia would be a mercy death. All you
have to do is look at the killer buyers trailers loaded up with no room
to
breath and look at you tube to see the slaughter houses processing the
horses before the are dead to see why NorCal is doing this. Read the
website. Ask questions of them. They are totally open about what they
are
doing. Cindy

I agree with that as well, however, putting them down because they are a
financial burden isn't "humane" in my opinion. It's ending a life
before it's time. Maybe I got the wrong impression from the original
post, but that's how it sounded to me and since there is such a surplus
of unwanted horses right now, they were proposing the option of
euthanasia as an alternative to normal upkeep. However, it did say that
those that qualified, would be adopted out, so in that sense, I hope
they are a major success!

Having and loving these Most Gracious members of our family makes us
responsible for their humane care. When their life has come to an end,
too much pain, it is our responsibility to allow them a gracious
end/release. Beccy

I hope to God I never get to the point in my life where I have to make a
choice to kill my friends & family rather than find a way to care for
them. I'd rather live in a tent than euthanize my animals.
If they're in excruciating pain and are suffering, that's one thing . .
.

I know, I know!! Some situations warrant this type of action. :(

This article was just released in The Horse.Com journal. It is wonderful
that this group is making sure that horses that they feel can be adopted
will be vs. all of them being put down.

Horse Rescue Offers Low-Cost Euthanasia Clinic

NorCal Equine Rescue in Oroville, Calif., will offer a low-cost
euthanasia clinic on Dec. 17 for owners who, due to economic or other
reasons, are unable to care for their horses. Owners will be charged $25
for the euthanasia service, which will be performed by veterinarians.

Clinic participation requires owners to sign a release allowing the
rescue to retain and place potentially adoptable horses. Horses that
prove to be unsuitable for adoption will be humanely euthanized through
the rescue's Final Act of Kindness program.

"The clinic is designed to provide financially strapped owners with an
alternative to bringing their horses to auction where they may not sell,
or may sell a very low price," said NorCal Co-Founder and Vice President
Tawnee Preisner.

The group plans to host similar events several times per year.
